Create, direct, and perform your own multmedia play with real actors.
With the Opening Night software program, students can create, direct, and perform on-screen plays. They may adapt literature or write original dialogue, then select from more than 110 sets and 300 props as they create scenes. The cast is chosen from 40 photo-realistic actors who can be directed to portray a wide range of emotions and carry out such physical actions as sitting, standing, walking, and speaking.
Opening Night is designed for one computer. It can be used by an entire class, by collaborative groups, or by an individual student. The software comes with a manual that contains instructions for using the product with Macintosh and with Windows. Additionally, the manual provides ideas for getting started as well as a study guide describing the elements of a play. Suggestions for integrating the software into other subject areas such as history and math are given. Handouts showing pictures of the scenery, actors, props, and containing lists of sound effects and attitudes may be reproduced for students. If students have these materials, they can make decisions about their writing and directing before they work at the computer to put their script into action.
Opening Night offers students an opportunity to enhance the learning of literary elements through theater. Students must apply their knowledge of these elements when they become playwrights and directors for their on-screen productions. Students also use their critical thinking skills as they put together the many components that go into each scene. While an individual student can use this program, the best results will come from the efforts of collaborative groups. Rather than having students depend on the on-screen actors, scripts can be printed out and used to stage live performances in the classroom. This software provides another avenue for enriching the language arts curriculum.
